Welcome to Jim's Time Machine!

Who knows...what audio...lurks on the webpages of an under-employed voiceover artist? Well, YOU do, now! From time to time, I plan to upload a few of my favorite pieces of audio bits and bobs (mostly old-time radio shows, but not everything) to share with whomever is interested, complete with attributions where appropriate and brief introductions to/explanation of the items by...Yours Truly, Jim McFarlane (see what I did there, OTR fans?)

These are a few of my favorite things...

Dark Benediction by Walter M. Miller, Jr.

Dark Benediction by Walter M. Miller, Jr.

Here is the 2023 unabridged audiobook narrated by moi! It really is my favorite short story and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have over the years.

Gunsmoke: "Hack Prine" (1954)

Dark Benediction by Walter M. Miller, Jr.

Here's an episode of the radio version of Gunsmoke, certainly the finest scripted western drama, radio OR tv, ever made.

From 1954, here's "Hack Prine."

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury

Here is the unabridged audiobook, narrated by me in 2023, that started me down this crazy journey through the world of Voiceover! This version is from the original 1950 Doubleday publication.

Dimension-X: "Courtesy" (1950)

BBC Radio 4: "Unmade Movies-- Alfred Hitchcock's The Blind Man" (2015)

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury

A harsh lesson from Wisconsin's own Clifford D. Simak, who would remind us that, as my Grandma Colleen would've said, "Honey catches more flies than vinegar."

BBC Radio 4: "Unmade Movies-- Alfred Hitchcock's The Blind Man" (2015)

BBC Radio 4: "Unmade Movies-- Alfred Hitchcock's The Blind Man" (2015)

BBC Radio 4: "Unmade Movies-- Alfred Hitchcock's The Blind Man" (2015)

This is one of the coolest, probably least-known gems that I've ever stumbled across: BBC Radio 4's project to transform unfinished films scripts into completed audio dramas. This is one of the best examples, starring a post-House Hugh Laurie and Rebecca Front!

CBC Radio Network: "The Next Witness - A Nero Wolfe Mystery" by Rex Stout (1982)

BBC Radio 4: "Unmade Movies-- Alfred Hitchcock's The Blind Man" (2015)

BBC Radio 4: "Unmade Movies-- Alfred Hitchcock's The Blind Man" (2015)

In 1982, the Canadian Broadcasting Company did a short series of full-cast audio dramatizations of well-known Nero Wolfe stories, and here is one of them. Originally written in 1955 for The American Magazine and called, "The Last Witness," it's a fun little whodunnit that only Nero Wolfe can solve!

Sci-Fi Radio (NPR): Light of Other Days by Bob Shaw (1989)

BBC Radio 4: The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (2014)

X-Minus One: "Skulking Permit" by Robert Scheckley (1956)

This is a very mid-60s (1966), very British melancholy story from Irish author Bob Shaw; a reminder that no matter what you're going through, there is probably someone else who has it worse off than you. If nothing else, it just may make you appreciate what (and who) you have.

X-Minus One: "Skulking Permit" by Robert Scheckley (1956)

BBC Radio 4: The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (2014)

X-Minus One: "Skulking Permit" by Robert Scheckley (1956)

This is a cute one from X-Minus One, featuring a 1954 gem from the always satirical Scheckley. A long-lost colony of Earth tries to prove itself civilized...by creating a criminal?!? A cautionary tale reminding us to be careful what we wish for!

BBC Radio 4: The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (2014)

BBC Radio 4: The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (2014)

BBC Radio 4: The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (2014)

Before there was Elmore Leonard, there was Raymond Chandler. I love Philip Marlowe and this is an excellent full-cast dramatization from 2014 by BBC Radio 4. Originally written in 1939, it's my favorite PM story and stars the wonderfully versatile Toby Stephens as Marlowe.
